Stephen Critoph, finance director of Restaurant Group (RTN), followed the lead set in October by fellow board member Tony Hughes by selling more than a third of his personal holding. Mr Critoph generated £675,000 through the sale of 100,000 shares at a share price that was just slightly adrift of the group's 200-day moving average.

The group operates a number of restaurant chains, including Frankie & Benny's and Garfunkel's, but with the National Living Wage looming into view investor enthusiasm for the sector has started to wane. Nevertheless, Restaurant Group has been performing reasonably well: sales for the year to the start of November were 2 per cent ahead of the comparable period in 2014 in the like-for-like estate, and 8 per cent ahead including new outlets. The group expects to have opened more than 42 sites by the end of the year, with a similar rollout expected for 2016.
