Home furnishings retailer Dunelm (DNLM) reported good first-quarter trading, with revenue up 17 per cent to £181m and like-for-like sales 9 per cent higher in the period. The figures were flattered by a weak performance this time last year, but even accounting for the favourable comparison Dunelm still outperformed.

Moreover, the gross margin continued to expand, by 40 basis points year on year, and so did the store footprint, with one outlet opened in the quarter. Chief executive Will Adderley said consumers were growing increasingly aware of Dunelm's offering, which has been partly down to investment in a national television advertising campaign.
