Shares in theme park operator Merlin Entertainments (MERL) took a dive this week after an accident at Alton Towers left four thrill-seekers with serious injuries. Chief executive Nick Varney called the accident "unusual" and "very tragic" and temporarily closed Alton Towers in the wake of the disaster. Mr Varney also confirmed the company would launch a full investigation into why regular safety measures failed to prevent the crash of one rollercoaster carriage into another.
