A growing love for online retail is good news for Macfarlane (MACF), which provides the packaging for wares bought on the internet. Management has been taking advantage of this trend with a series of acquisitions and this week added another business to its portfolio - Colton Packaging Teeside, a small packaging distribution company based in Middlesbrough.

At £1.25m, it's not a big acquisition, but chief executive Peter Atkinson says the company will "complement" the existing Newcastle branch and "strengthen Macfarlane's presence in the north east of England".
