Arm's Apical deal is atypical

The microchip designer announced a $350m acquisition that left analysts unconvinced

Few companies value each of their workers at £2.4m. But Arm (ARM) was happy to pay $350m (£243m) for Apical, a business with around 100 employees. The microchip designer expects the imaging and computer vision specialist to accelerate its progress in explosive markets such as robotics, smart cities and internet-connected vehicles.

Both companies license out their technology and collect royalties when customers deploy it in their devices. Apical counts Samsung, LG and Huawei among its customers. But it certainly didn't come cheap: the deal price values it at over 14 times its turnover in the year to March 2015.
