Amlin, like most insurers, was hit hard by a string of costly catastrophes last year. Indeed, after suffering £500m of catastrophe-related losses - from such events as the Japanese and New Zealand earthquakes - the group reported a loss-making combined ratio (of claims to premiums) of 108 per cent.
