Sainsbury's (SBRY) has been successfully growing market share while diversifying into non-grocery areas, and the group looks increasingly like the sector's front-runner. However, there are rumours that headhunters have been hired to replace chief executive Justin King and the management team are already facing a tough trading period ahead. In fact, guidance is for like-for-like sales of between 1-1.5 per cent in the financial year to mid-March 2014. The shares have fallen 6 per cent since the full-year results a month ago, and with analysts pencilling in 8 per cent earnings growth in the current financial year, a rating of 12 times prospective earnings looks fair ahead of the company's first-quarter trading update.

A first-quarter trading statement from Home Retail (HRG), the owner of DIY chain Homebase and catalogue retailer Argos, should shed some light on the nation's spending habits in the past three months.
Argos delivered its first like-for-like sales growth in five years in the 12 months to early March, so analysts will be keeping a keen eye on the underlying performance to see whether the trend has continued into the new financial year. Homebase performed less well. Sales fell 5 per cent last year due to weak consumer spending, sending operating profit plunging more than 50 per cent. The strategy is to turn Homebase into a "differentiated multi-channel home-enhancement retailer" with a stylish "female-friendly" proposition. To achieve this, Homebase is refitting stores, improving service and expanding the Laura Ashley and Habitat concessions. Expect an update on the progress being made in Thursday's trading update.
