Majestic insider cashes in

When a chief executive goes on a buying spree and snaps 1.7 per cent of his company it is worth taking note especially when analysts expect earnings to ramp up too. And this is exactly what the boss of a small cap engineer has been doing.
September 5, 2013 & Lee Wild

For Justin Apthorp, Majestic Wine's (MJW) buying director, the company is more than just a wine merchant, but a family business, given that is was founded by his father in 1980. The Apthorps have historically been major shareholders, which is why investors shouldn't be too spooked that Mr Apthorp recently offloaded 35 per cent of is stake in the company on 30 August. He sold 267,200 shares at 510p each, giving him a windfall of more than £1.3m to fund the purchase of a flat. Given that the shares have risen 27 per cent since mid-May, and hit an all-time high last month, it's perhaps no wonder that Mr Apthorp decided to cash in.

The recent share price rally reflects good trading at Majestic. In the last financial year to 1 April, underlying sales rose 2.6 per cent while UK same store retail sales were up 1 per cent - not bad for a small company whose main competitors are the supermarket giants.

Customer numbers are increasing too and that's largely thanks to quality service, product selection and events like wine tastings. Internet sales are growing fast, while a store-rollout is helping to boost brand awareness. The rating, though, factors all of this in, with shares now trading on 17 times forecast earnings. We maintain our hold recommendation.

Renold chief keeps buying

New boss Robert Purcell's shake-up at industrial chains and gearbox maker Renold (RNO) continues apace. After setting out a strategy to lower the company's break-even point in the spring, a loss-making factory in Bredbury in Manchester has been earmarked for closure. Mr Purcell's passion for stripping out excess capacity is matched only by his enthusiasm for company shares. He bought another 500,000 at 28p just days after the news, lifting the stake amassed since taking over in January to 3.75m. Mandy Harper, related to chairman Mark, spent £25,000, too.

Renold said in June it had already taken £1m of overheads out of the business in the first quarter, which should improve operating margins. A 3.5 per cent dip in revenue, meanwhile, confirms the trend for a more moderate slowdown at the top line. In fact, analysts at N+1 Singer reckon full-year sales will be unchanged, but that adjusted pre-tax profit will jump over a third to £6m, giving adjusted EPS of 2.1p. Renold's share price has rallied more than a fifth since we said buy (27p, 20 June 2013), but with earnings tipped to grow at least as fast over the next few years, they remain a speculative buy.
