Boss cashes in at Hargreaves Services

It's always worth paying note when the insiders bank profits, but sometimes it pays not to follow the directors lead.
October 31, 2013

Coal supplier Hargreaves Services (HSP) has something of a chequered past. Serious geological and safety problems led to the closure of its Maltby mine, while its Belgium operations were hit by fraud. That explains the cheap rating on the shares; trading on less than seven times earnings the rating stick out like a sore thumb in their support services universe where the average multiple is around 14 times earnings. Strip out the disasters and there are nuggets of gold, though - the company's energy and commodities division posted a 12 per cent jump in profit last year and material handling profits rose 39 per cent.

However, the market has yet to fully forgive the mistakes of the past - the shares are up 21 per cent in the past year, but at 871p are more than 25 per cent well below their early 2012 highs of over 1,200p. So the recent share sale by chief executive Gordon Banham, who led a management buyout in 2004, cannot really be described as cashing in. Indeed, the company said it was due to tax planning. Mr Banham sold 710,000 shares at 890p and a further 170,000 shares at 900p, taking his stake down to 6.8 per cent from 9.5 per cent. With value apparent but mindful of the company's recent habit of suffering unexpected pitfalls, we stick with our hold rating.

Shares in aviation services and news distribution company John Menzies (MNZS) hit a 52-week high of 841.5p on 16 October. Some, at least, thought that marked a good point to sell. Disclosures last week relating to trusts over which the spouse of non-executive director Dermot Jenkinson has both beneficial and non-beneficial interests reveal that a total of 391,250 shares were sold with the share sales starting on 16 October. The shares were sold at prices between 812p and 825.2p, and the trusts are left with a beneficial holding of 3.15 per cent and a non-beneficial holding of 4.14 per cent.

The business itself is a tale of two halves. Aviation services such as ground handling and cargo are going from strength to strength as Menzies racks up new contracts and makes bolt-on acquisitions. But newspaper and magazine distribution is being hit by poor magazine sales and title closures and so the focus here is on cost-cutting and trying to find new sources of revenue. The overall mix means Menzies is a company with modest growth prospects. So, priced on a fair looking forward price-earnings ratio of 11, and supported by a 3 per cent dividend yield, we maintain our hold rating on the shares at 790p.
