Following the broad market sell-off that hit equity markets in October, London-listed recruiters have seen their share prices take a hit. Companies in this sector are often regarded as bellwethers for the health of the wider economy, which also makes them liable to sharp drops on a turn in the market.

Despite a broadly positive recent trading update, there have been a number of director share sales at Hays (HAS). In early December, Merete Cox, spouse of Hays’ chief executive Alistair Cox, sold 1.1m shares in the recruiter as part of a "planned asset diversification strategy". Earlier in September, finance director Paul Venables sold around 1.02m shares, again in a diversification move.
