It’s not quite clear who at Highland Gold Mining (HGM) first thought to buy the Valunisty mine from the Cyprus-incorporated Aristus Holdings. But the deal, which completed on 31 December 2018 eight months after it was announced, has resulted in a boost to the holdings of at least seven Highland shareholders.
Among that group is Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich, whose shares in Aristus means he now indirectly owns a further 9.36m shares in Highland, upping his overall holding in the precious metals firm from 7.2 to 9.7 per cent.
Another beneficiary is Highland chairman Eugene Shvidler, who will shrug off a small dilution in his overall stake thanks to his fresh entitlement to 3.86m new shares in Highland, worth £5.5m at the equity issue price of 146p.
Non-executive director Valery Oyf – who was Highland’s chief executive for eight years until 2016 – is now the indirect owner of 1.93m new shares in Highland, bringing his total stake to £25.3m at the current 154p share price.
