Cluff Gold reported strong first-quarter earnings, despite soft production from its Kalsaka gold mine in Burkina Faso - a higher average gold price helped cash profits rise to $5.3m (£3.4m) from $4.6m a year earlier.

Still, and in line with expectations, gold production fell to 12,504 ounces from 16,837 ounces in the same period last year after the group mined a sequence of lower-grade ore. Investor attention is now focused on Cluff's flagship Baomahun project in Sierra Leone where a resource update is expected this month - the publication of a final feasibility study there has been pushed back slightly to August.
