Chart: Disney wins big at the movies

Disney (US:DIS) failed to wow investors with its second-quarter results to 2 April, as sales dipped in its media networks business and fell 4 per cent in the consumer products and interactive media segment. But its studio entertainment division remains in rude health: revenues surged 22 per cent, driving operating income up 27 per cent to $542m (£376m).

Our chart shows the segment's remarkable increase in profitability over the past three years, reflecting huge blockbusters such as Frozen and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And it looks poised for further success: recent hits such as Zootopia, The Jungle Book and Captain America: Civil War mean it has already racked up $1bn in domestic ticket sales this calendar year, breaking rival Universal Pictures' record by 37 days.
