John Shipsey has parted with £373,500 to take an initial stake in Smiths Group (SMIN) a little under six months after he was confirmed as chief financial officer for the industrial conglomerate.

Timing is everything. And we think Mr Shipsey, loyalty aside, is getting in when Smiths is finally pulling out of an ebb tide with a key segment of the group, namely the John Crane business unit. John Crane, a supplier of engineering products for the global energy and process markets (chemicals, pharma etc), has had to endure a prolonged slump in energy capex budgets following the 2015 oil price collapse. But its latest half-year figures detailed a return to underlying revenue growth at the business, together with a strengthening order book.
