These are exciting times for Ocado (OCDO). In February, the online grocery retailer announced a joint venture with Marks & Spencer (MKS), which will see the supermarket pay £750m for a half share of Ocado’s UK grocery retail business. Customers will be able to buy M&S products on the platform from September 2020, replacing Ocado’s existing sourcing agreement with Waitrose.

Despite this, things are not all rosy. A fire at the group’s Andover customer fulfilment centre in February saw the group lose a tenth of its capacity, and while Morrisons (MRW) stepped in to allow Ocado full use of their joint fulfilment centre in Erith until 2021, the two also relaxed exclusivity provisions, allowing the supermarket to take on additional digital partners.
Amid all the excitement, it is a little concerning to see Ocado’s chairman, Lord Rose of Monewden, sell a huge chunk of his stake in the group. He sold 450,000 shares for more than £5.5m, a move that reduces the size of his holding by more than 37 per cent.
