Shareholders in BAE Systems (BA.) will note the group’s formal submission to the Australian government to meet the Royal Australian Navy’s requirement for nine next-generation frigates. The anti-submarine warfare fleet will replace the existing eight Anzac Class frigates and are essentially variants on the Type 26 Global Combat Ship design, which BAE Systems recently started building for the Royal Navy. (The full £3.7bn production contract for the first batch of three Type 26 frigates was signed in June.) BAE is competing against Fincantieri and Navantia, with the competitive evaluation process expected to conclude next year.
Closer to home, submarine activity is also increasing with the Royal Navy’s Astute and Dreadnought class submarines now both in production. Assembly of the second ship under the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier programme is well under way, while sea trials on the first of the two ships commenced in June.
