Health is all the rage these days, and recent activity at Gym Group (GYM) suggests management expects the trend to continue. In June, it bought 13 locations from easyGym and is in the process of converting these sites to its own branding. It follows another gym acquisition from Lifestyle last year. But site conversions have weighed on profitability. Case in point: strip acquisition and conversion costs and pre-tax profits rose 8.4 per cent to £7m during the first half. But membership numbers also increased by 42 per cent to more than 720,000.
Progressing these ambitious expansion plans has helped send the shares up nearly 40 per cent over the past 12 months, leaving some shareholders eyeing up a profit opportunity. Senior independent non-executive director Paul Gilbert is one such stakeholder, choosing to reduce his holding by roughly half for £620,000. A Gym Group spokesperson said Mr Gilbert’s interests are still "very much aligned" with the company.
