Since hitting a five-year peak of 1,644p at the end of August, Abcam's (ABC) shares have lost nearly a third of their value. True, equity markets in general have hardly been kind, but a disappointing set of results in early September followed shortly by company founder and deputy chairman Jonathan Milner’s annual share sale – this time to the value of £14m – haven’t lent the stock any further support.

That said, Mr Milner’s wife, Roza Gounari, has spent close to £2m topping up her stake in the business. Sceptics might argue Ms Gounari is taking advantage of a depressed share price, and ignore the fact that at its current level of 1,051p, the stock still changes hands for 31 times Numis’s forecast EPS of 34p in FY2019.
