Real estate investment trust NewRiver Retail (NRR) enjoyed a busy festive period: in the last three months of the year it managed to increase its property portfolio by nearly 9 per cent to £800m. That included acquisitions of over £30m, comprising two shopping centres, five high-street units and two retail warehouses.
The group was set up by real estate veteran David Lockhart in 2009 to focus on buying bombed-out retail sites outside London. His acquisitive approach has been funded by a number of well supported fund-raising exercises that have more than tripled the company's market capitalisation. The most recent placing raised around £75m through the issue of 27.2m shares at 275p a share. The shares have since risen by around 7 per cent, so directors subscribing to the new issue are already sitting on a profit. The purchases included 10,000 shares by non-executive chairman Paul Roy, 20,000 by chief executive David Lockhart and 17,543 by property director Allan Lockhart.
