Breedon Aggregates (BREE) chief executive Pat Ward knows a good thing when he sees it, and given the way the aggregates group has been steadily expanding, his recent purchase of 150,000 shares at 70p looks like a sound bet. This is his first investment in Breedon, although earlier this month he was also awarded 709,219 shares under the group's performance share plan scheme. The scheme matures on 6 April 2019 and is subject to underlying EPS growth being significantly in excess of growth in inflation as measured by the retail prices index over a three-year period ending 31 December 2018. Under the same scheme, chairman Peter Tom was awarded 531,914 shares and finance director Rob Wood 425,531 shares.
Profits at Breedon grew by nearly 50 per cent in 2015, and the proposed acquisition of Hope Construction Materials could almost double the size of the business. However, following its Phase 1 review, the Competition and Markets Authority has concluded that the acquisition would reduce competition in a limited number of ready-mixed concrete markets in England and Scotland. Breedon was expecting this and may have to offload some of its ready-mixed concrete production facilities.
