Market Outlook: Airlines avoid Iranian and Iraqi airspace

Following ballistic attacks and an aeroplane crash in Tehran
January 8, 2020

CNBC this morning reports that several airlines have said they will be avoiding Iranian airspace and cancelling flights to Baghdad following a dozen ballistic missiles aimed at 2 army bases housing US troops in Iraq. This coincided with a Boeing 737 aeroplane which crashed minutes after take-off from Tehran killing all people on board. The US Federal Aviation Administration has prohibited civil plane operators from flying over Iran, Iraq, waters of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

Today ex-Nissan president Carlos Ghosn holds an eagerly awaited press conference in Beirut. This follows his spy-thriller style escape from house arrest in Tokyo on December 29th. He denies all charges against him, and now Japanese authorities issued an arrest warrant for his wife Carole.

Surging again and still very overbought thus keeping part of the gap created this week. Interesting to see how this is one of the few markets feeling the full flack of political tensions.

SHORT TERM TRADER:  Square.

POSITION TAKER:  Square.
