Breedon (BREE) non-executive chairman Amit Bhatia has picked up almost half of the shares sold by his predecessor, boosting the stake of Abicad Holding Ltd ('Abicad') – in which he is a director – to 18.4 per cent of the group’s share capital. Peter Tom stepped down as executive chairman in May, selling 22m shares in the construction group held on his behalf by Hermco Property Ltd – equivalent to a 1.3 per cent stake. Abicad said it would be willing to purchase the full sale amount.

The group entered Ireland via its £455m acquisition of construction materials specialist Lagan, a construction market where output grew more than 6 per cent last year, compared with Great Britain and Northern Ireland where activity was only “modestly ahead”. However, the group has been battling increased input costs and Brexit-related uncertainty, which weighed on demand in the ready-mix concrete and asphalt markets and led to a 6 per cent reduction in like-for-like adjusted operating profits last year.
