William Hill (WMH) announced that its current chief executive, Philip Bowcock, will step down from the role and his position as a director of the company from the end of September. He will be replaced by Ulrik Bengtsson, who has been chief digital officer since he joined the company in April 2018. Prior to joining William Hill, Mr Bengtsson was chief executive of Swedish online gambling company Betsson AB for five years.
The appointment of Mr Bengtsson signals the importance of digital to William Hill’s strategy. Analysts at Goodbody noted that chief executive changes in the gambling sector have often led to a period of uncertainty as extensive searches take time so the seamless nature of this change should be welcomed.
